Topic: Guard against being defrauded

Text:  Colossians 2:14- 18

Key verse: “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshiping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.” Colossians 2:18

Let no man defraud you of your reward. Let no man take your crown. How can a man defraud you of your crown? How can a man rob you of your reward?

The answer is found in the context. We do not have time to examine everything that is suggested, so let me sum it all up by saying that in Paul's day there was a cult known as Gnosticism. The modern counterpart of Gnosticism is Christian Science. Christian Science emphasized much that the Gnostics emphasized. Cults such as Seventh Day Adventism emphasize some of them; and other cults, such as Mormonism, emphasize some of the things which are here. Russellism, or Jehovah's Witnesses, whose tenets are related to those Gnostics, are described in this very paragraph.

Don't let anyone rob you of your crown by getting you mixed up in things which are not true teachings of the Word of God–teachings that do not hold Christ as the sole Head of the Church. You see where the danger lies. It does not lie in the temptation to go off and do something evil and wicked and immoral. It lies in getting involved in things which detract from the grace of God and keep you from growing in your Christian experience as you should consequently, you lose your reward.

Do you see why I say that the desire for a reward can be a gauge for your Christian living? Are you abiding by the rules of the game? If you are not, you are going to lose your reward. There is no question about it. Do you keep right associations in regard to the basic fact of the deity of Christ? Are you mixed up and involved in various movements that are abroad in these times, which have just enough of the Scripture in them to lead you astray but not enough to glorify the Head of the Church, the Lord Jesus Christ? If you are in such company, you are in danger of losing your reward. He who has ears let him hear.

Prayer: Holy Spirit guard me from evil companies in Jesus name.
